Robert Fletcher Gilder was a Nebraska-associated American painter best known for atmospheric landscapes of the Great Plains and the Missouri River region, particularly scenes like the present work. He studied painting in New York under August Will and worked largely in an impressionistic manner, emphasizing mood, seasonal light, and terrain, again as seen here. He exhibited regularly at Whitmore's Art Gallery in Omaha and showed works in New York, St. Paul (Minnesota), Arizona, and California. His paintings are held in public and institutional collections, including museums in Nebraska and other American academic and regional collections. In addition to his artistic career, Gilder is notable for his work as an amateur archaeologist, conducting early investigations along the Missouri River bluffs that contributed to what later scholars termed the Nebraska Phase of Plains archaeology.
