William Samuel Schwartz (Russian/american 1896-1977) - WILLIAM SCHWARTZ (1896-1977) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER. William Samuel Schwartz (Russian/american 1896-1977) Springtime in the Smokies Circa 1940. The watercolor in Schwartz's unique style is signed upper left. Unlike most artists whose works in the watercolor medium differ visually from their oils, Schwartz achieves the same visual sensations of light, edge and atmosphere across both mediums. The interesting composition is contemplative in a number of ways, from the empty chair to the decaying wood to the color palette, and the figure with their back to the viewer. William Schwartz was born in Russia to a poor Jewish family. In 1913 he emigrated to America to live with relatives in Nebraska. In 1916 he earned a scholarship to the School of The Art Institute of Chicago where he was an honor student. During the Depression he worked under the Federal Art Project (WPA), creating the public murals ' Mining ' for the Century of Progress Exposition (1933), ' Composers ' for Glencoe Public Library (1935), and ' Chicago ' for the Cook County Nurses, all in Illinois. His works are held in the Art Institute of Chicago, The Illinois State Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art.
