Cecil Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) - ROSE O'NEILL EARLY UNUSUAL IMPORTANT PUCK ILLUSTRATION. Cecil Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) The detailed work on J. WHATMAN 1896 watermarked paper is a rare example executed in dry black crayon rather than India ink. The work is signed O'Neill Latham in India ink lower right. The signature O'Neill Latham relates to the period when Rose O'Neill was married to Gray Latham and working as the first and, to date, only female illustrator on the magazine's staff. The sheet is stamped PROPERTY OF PUCK, N.Y. verso. In the PBS documentary Rose O'Neill: An Artful Life , O'Neill describes what happened when she joined Puck and married Gray Latham in 1896: '' In 1896, I had begun my seven years on the staff of Puck. After I married Gray, that year, I began to sign my drawings, 'O'Neill Latham.' The public thought I was a man. '' She then gives a rather wonderful indication of how completely the 'misunderstanding' worked. She recalled receiving ''an abundance of letters, '' including fan mail from women, sometimes accompanied by locks of hair.
