Cecil Rose O'Neill (1874-1944) The Kewpies Made the Business of Learning Quite Amusing 1916 The original India ink illustration by Rose O'Neill is signed lower left front. Of particular interest in this very unusual illustration is the mysterious face at lower right. Rendered in the more modeled, Symbolist manner associated with Rose O'Neill's celebrated 'Sweet Monsters, ' completely unlike the other depictions wearing mortar boards. This is a very unusual intersection between the artist's commercial Kewpie illustrations and her more ambitious fine-art imagery. This sheet is inscribed The Kewpies Made the Business of Learning Quite Amusing lower left in the artist's hand, and bears a Good Housekeeping magazine editorial department ink stamp verso along with date inscriptions in Rose O'Neill's hand. This may have been one of three pages of original illustration by O'Neill for October of 1916. Correspondence between Rose O'Neill and editor William Curtis Gibson around 1913 includes discussion for O'Neill to provide three pages of Kewpie content each month.
