Adolf Arthur Dehn (1895-1968) Franky and Johnny in Paris 1928 The lithograph, numbered 22 from an edition of only 30 prints, is signed and dated by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left. Unframed. Acquired from the artist's family. This is a nice, well-inked image. At the time this was made, Dehn was living in Europe between Vienna, Paris and Berlin where he found it cheaper to live and easier to be a nearly starving artist. Here he immersed himself in the cafes, cabarets, theaters and nightlife of Paris, Vienna and Berlin, developing an eye for human behavior that would define his graphic work in Europe, and later in Harlem, where he continued to lampoon performers and spectators alike. This, and other works with titles like A Black Man in Paris , and, later, Harlem Orchids and Swinging at the Savoy (also in this sale) chronicle his encounters with the racially and sexually liberated atmosphere of Jazz Age Paris and, later, Harlem. According to Smithsonian archives, he supported himself at this time in part by sending drawings to publications like The Dial , The Liberator, Jugend , Vanity Fair, and Simplicissimus.
