Adolf Arthur Dehn (1895-1968) Bar American 1928 The lithograph, numbered 2 from an edition of only 15 prints, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and numbered lower left. This image is held in the collections of the Portland Museum, the Art Institute of Chicago and the Virginia Museum of Arts. Otherwise, no record of this rare print having ever appeared at auction, or sold in dealer offerings, could be found searching databases going back 30-plus years. At the time this was made, Dehn was living in Europe between Vienna, Paris and Berlin where he found it cheaper to live and easier to be a nearly starving artist. Here he immersed himself in the cafes, cabarets, theaters and nightlife of Paris, Vienna and Berlin, developing an eye for human behavior that would define his graphic work in Europe, and later in Harlem, where he continued to lampoon performers and spectators alike.
