This, and other works with titles like A Black Man in Paris, and, later, Harlem Orchids and Swinging at the Savoy (also in this sale) chronicle Adolf Dehn's encounters with the racially and sexually liberated atmosphere of Jazz Age Paris during the 1920s and, later, Harlem. According to Smithsonian archives, he supported himself at this time in part by sending drawings like this to publications such as The Dial, The Liberator, Jugend, Vanity Fair, and Simplicissimus.
