A 19C. TIBETAN THANGKA DEPICTING AN ASSEMBLY OF ARHATS - The sacred scroll painting depicts an assembly of four principal Arhats within a composition is divided into two sections set within an expansive landscape of stylized rolling waves, mountain peaks, and blooming peonies. The upper left features an expressive, bare-chested Arhat, likely Kanakabharadvaja, holding an elongated string of prayer beads (mala), to the right by an Arhat seated in the gesture of teaching (vitarka mudra). The lower section depicts two additional Arhats seated upon elaborate high-backed Chinese-style thrones: to the left is Angaja flanked by attendants bearing offering bowls, and to the right is Ajita, distinguished by a crown of fresh green leaves draped over his head. The thangka is framed by its original multi-layered textile housing, comprising fine inner orange and yellow silk borders set within a heavy, outer navy-black silk brocade adorned with woven gold-gilt Shou (longevity) and floral medallions. The piece is complete with its twin orange ribbons, and a yellow silk protective veil. Measures 45 x 33 inches.
