Mercator-Jodocus Hondius - MERCATOR-JODOCUS HONDIUS 17TH CENTURY MAP OF CHINA. Mercator-Jodocus Hondius CHINA 1606 A fine hand colored map engraved by Jodocus Hondius in 1606 for the expanded edition of the Mercator-Hondius 'Atlas.'' The cartography shows the whole of China from the Bay of Bengal to Manchuria and includes Korea as an Island, Japan and the North West Coast of America. Korea and Japan are modelled on the Ortelius-Teixeira outline of 1595, Korea as an elongated island and Japan as three main islands with no indication of Hokkaido. To the right of Japan a scrollwork vignette depicts the Japanese crucifixion of the Christian martyrs. Two ships fill the North Pacific, a European galleon and a Japanese junk. Far to the left in Mainland Asia Hondius presents one of the curious wind machines used by the inhabitants of Eastern Asia. A scrolled title cartouche appears top left.
