SHONO SHOUNSAI (1904-1974) BAMBOO FLOWER BASKET, ADAIR - The rustic dark-patinated bamboo basket for flower arranging is of square openwork construction embracing the wabi-sabi aesthetic utilizing wide, thick, bamboo staves bound in a robust, open cross-hatch structure. The distinctive handle is crafted from a natural bamboo section with visible nodes and fastened to the rim with finely plaited rattan wrapping. The base ring is constructed of twisted bamboo cordage with the artist's incised signature on a central bottom stave. The signature is attributed to Shono Shounsai, the first bamboo artist in history to be designated a Living National Treasure of Japan. Measures 15 x 8.5 inches in diameter.
