A JAPANESE BASKET IN FORM OF A JOMON POT, ADAIR ESTATE - The artist signed basket is found in a period tomobako inscribed Yamashita Kochikusai. The basket design recalls the form of an ancient pottery vessel from Japan's Jomon period, Hexagonal plaiting with heavy, structural horizontal bands wrapped in dark rattan create the form. The multi-strand overhead handle with intricate butterfly knot rises gracefully above the wide mouth. It joins the rim with complex decorative looping knots. The overall surface displays a deep, rich lacquer patina overall. Measures 21 x 9 x 8 inches.
