AN EXTRAORDINARY SHOKOSAI III JAPANESE BASKET, ADAIR - The inventive details of this example include its transition from cylindrical form at the bent, multi-layer and handsomely laced circular rim to its hexagonal shape base via a six-sided body constructed from wide, overlapping bamboo stays in a diagonal twill/plaiting pattern. The body is accentuated vertically with bamboo stays lashed at rhythmic intervals in fine and exuberant rattan knotting. The gracefully bent bamboo handle with natural nodules attaches smoothly along the sides with additional unique and masterfully applied ornamental knotwork. The base is a sturdy hand-bent hexagonal frame once again laced in skillful and unique ways. This includes the side stays that descend the side, wrap at the base forming the four raised corner feet and then rising again up the sides forming the outer frame. The piece is finished in a rich, aged patina and the original inscribed tomobako is included. A label on the box may indicate that this basket was included in an exhibition.
