A FINE CHIKUBOSAI I 1930s JAPANESE BASKET, ADAIR ESTATE - The tapering cylindrical body rises from a substantial and precisely built circular ring foot, continuing in a meticulous openwork hexagonal mesh accented by sets of vertical braided bamboo stays that extend the length of the body and terminate in decorative knotting. The sweeping handle is anchored by decorative multi-strand knotting along the shoulder ring in raised, spiral rattan rosette knots and further decorated by eleven butterfly knots across the span. The handsomely patinated basket is complete with its original dark-stained bamboo water liner and its fitted paulownia tomobako with inscriptions including the date of 1932.
