A BRILLIANT JAPANESE FIREMAN'S JACKET WITH JIRAYIA - The rare 19th century firefighter's jacket of thick multi-layered hand-loomed cotton is boldly decorated in ten colors with a dramatic, full-scale depiction of the folk hero Jiraiya standing atop his giant toad amidst a striking depiction of swirling clouds and hanging smoke. The scene is rendered with extraordinary detail, including an elaborate depiction of the toad's knobbly skin. The front and sleeves are decorated with that well-executed depiction of stylized smoke-and-cloud motifs. Measures 36.5 x 48 inches.
