William Samuel Schwartz (1896-1977) - WILLIAM SCHWARTZ (1896-1977) NEW DEAL ERA OIL ON CANVAS. William Samuel Schwartz (1896-1977) Docks at Washington Island Circa 1935 The 1930s American Scene composition of ships and weathered pilings on a Lake Michigan waterfront is signed lower left front, and again verso near the title in artist's hand. Washington Island lies off the northern tip of Wisconsin's Door Peninsula. The Washington Docks served industry and a passenger ferry, which has just delivered passengers. The work is displayed in an outstanding frame of the period. William Schwartz was an honor student at the Chicago Art Institute. Later, during the Depression, he worked under the Federal Art Project (WPA), creating the public murals ' Mining ' for the Century of Progress Exposition (1933), ' Composers ' for Glencoe Public Library (1935), and ' Chicago ' for the Cook County Nurses Home', all in Illinois. His easel works are held in the Art Institute of Chicago, Illinois State Museum, Smithsonian American Art Museum, San Francisco Museum of Art, Dallas Museum of Art, Pennsylvania Museum of Fine Arts, Museum of Modern Art, Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Whitney Museum of American Art. It does not fluoresce and is possibly residue or other aberration .
