Eastwood (1898-1987) Edith Circa 1945 A rare departure from his signature Cape Cod seascapes, this painting is one of the first known examples of a Raymond Eastwood composition to feature a human figure. The longtime professor at the University of Kansas, rarely integrated figures into his work; a search of 40 years of auction records reveals that the only other two examples are included in this auction. Raymond Eastwood taught at the University of Kansas from 1922 to 1968. During that time he exhibited his work extensively from Kansas to Connecticut, often summering in Cape Cod where he perfected his most enduring motif, the contemplative stillness of the surrounding dunes and landforms. He first visited the area shortly after finishing studies at the Yale School of Fine Arts and the Art Students League of New York. The dunes of Cape Cod provided a natural counterpart to the plains of the Midwest - both terrains offering broad, simplified forms and a sense of expansive quietude.
