The unusual Southwest landscape, apparently the first of its type to appear at auction, according to all major databases of auction records, is signed lower right front. Raymond Eastwood is best known for capturing the quietude of Cape Cod sand dune structures. His Cape Cod paintings are characterized by their quiet structure, restrained palette, and emphasis on landform - qualities that parallel the present work - though in a markedly different environment. Raymond Eastwood taught at the University of Kansas from 1922 to 1968. During that time he exhibited his work extensively from Kansas to Connecticut, often summering in Massachusetts where he perfected his most enduring motif, the contemplative stillness of the region's dunes and landforms. He first visited these areas shortly after finishing studies at the Yale School of Fine Arts and the Art Students League of New York. The dunes of Cape Cod provided a natural counterpart to the terrain of the Southwest United States, both offering broad, simplified forms and a sense of expansive quietude.
