The beautifully drafted portrait displaying incredible tonal qualities is signed lower right. The subject, a beautiful young African American woman named Willa, is presented in a Classical profile pose an elaborate updo coiffure punctuated by small spherical ornaments and a similar earring. Her blouse is meticulously detailed and positioned far below her shoulders. It is worth noting here that the art critic Frank E. Washburn once wrote, 'Canedo uses his forms not only to convey corporeal beauty, but, as the best Greek masters did, to reveal inner states of mind. The back of the framing for this present piece is inscribed, 'Our maid - 1958 - 1960 married Clark Gable's butler - 1963.' Alexander Canedo was a Mexican American painter and illustrator associated with the surrealism and magic realism art movements of the mid-20th century. As an illustrator he created covers for pulp magazines like Astounding Science Fiction throughout the 1940s. As an artist, he is best known for his figurative, surrealist-imagery that blends dreamlike symbolism with meticulous realism.
