A very similar composition titled Old Gray House, Newark by New Jersey artist Henry Martin Gasser pictures a very similar neighborhood below a nearly identical skyline of slablike skyscrapers. Ruth Mitchell Wolff was an American painter and watercolorist active in the early to mid-20th century. A resident of Verona, New Jersey, she studied at the Rochester Athenaeum of Fine and Applied Arts (now Rochester Institute of Technology), graduating in 1918. She maintained a commercial studio in Rochester that same year and won early recognition while still a student. She pursued advanced study under Anna Page Scott, Gustave Baumann in Chicago, and Charles Chapman in New York. She and her husband regularly exhibited their work in regional exhibitions.
