Anthony Angarola (1893-1929) Jacob Loose Park-The Old Country Club Golf Park (Kansas City) 1928 A rare and significant oil on canvas by the short-lived American Modernist Anthony Angarola, signed lower left front and titled in ink verso. The scene interprets an outing at the original Kansas City Country Club, located where Jacob Loose Park stands today. The Country Club Golf Park property was initially made available by KC attorney Hugh Ward for the manageable sum of $1, and maintenance of the taxes. Around the time of this painting the Country Club Golf Park then moved to its current home near 62nd and Indian Lane in Mission Hills and the widow of Jacob Loose, founder of Sunshine Biscuits, purchased the property to erect a park to serve as a memorial to her husband. The artist portrays the landscape, trees, a striking red horse-drawn trolley and standing figures in rich, expressive colors with the modern style he was well-known for here at the peak of his career. Anthony Angarola would die a year later of heart disease at the age of only 36. Angarola had come to Kansas City two years earlier to serve as director of the painting department at the Kansas City Art Institute. He grew up in Chicago and attended the Chicago Art Institute as a young man while also working as a shipping clerk, a page in a library, and as an amateur prize fighter. Just after this painting, in the year before his death, he was awarded a Guggenheim Fellowship to study painting in Italy. Anthony Angarola was a celebrated Modernist who, while in Kansas City, exhibited his work alongside the groundbreaking avant garde Albert Bloch and French sculptor Aristide Maillol. Works by Anthony Angarola are held in the National Gallery of Art, the Minneapolis Institute of Art, Davis Museum, and The Chicago Art Institute. But his work is rarely available for purchase. Fewer than fifteen oil paintings by Anthony Angarola have appeared at auction in the last 40 years. Canvas measures 28 x 30 with a framed size of 35 x 37 inches.
