Regis Gignoux is most associated with the Hudson River School, known for his atmospheric views of forests, mountains, and pastoral settings. The composition here differs geographically, but the work, a carefully structured composition of refined draftsmanship with subtle treatment of light and atmosphere still aligns with Hudson River School. Born in France, Regis Francois Gignoux emigrated to the United States in the 1840s and became active in New York, where he studied under John William Casilear and moved within the circle of artists influenced by Thomas Cole. He exhibited regularly at the National Academy of Design and the American Art-Union.
