Eastwood (1898-1987) Seated Figure This painting marks one of the first figurative works by Raymond Eastwood to ever appear at auction. The only other examples on record are being offered in this same sale catalog. The Kansas artist Raymond Eastwood was, until now, known only for his seaside landscapes. According to historical listings on all the major art databases going back 40 years, no other figurative examples have ever been offered. The present painting was exhibited at the Kansas City Art Institute in 1940 and won First Prize in the painting category. Duard Marshall took first prize in the watercolor division that year. Found in a very fine frame of the period, this work is signed lower right front and retains the 1940 exhibition labels verso. Raymond Eastwood taught at the University of Kansas from 1922 to 1968. During that time he exhibited his work extensively from Kansas to Connecticut, often summering in Cape Cod where he perfected his most enduring motif, the contemplative stillness of the surrounding dunes and landforms.
