Jean Eugene Baffier (French 1851-1920) Circa 1910 Three figural elements from a monumental 65-piece dining room service made exclusively for Angelo Mariani (1838-1914), the well known creator and marketer of Vin Mariani, ''a popular 19th-century French patent medicine and coca wine created in 1863 by chemist Angelo Mariani, it blended Bordeaux wine with coca leaves, extracting roughly 6-7 mg of cocaine per ounce using the alcohol as a solvent. Marketed as a tonic for vitality, it heavily influenced the creation of Coca-Cola.'' The table service, like the pieces offered here was cast in pewter with bronze figures, designed as a complete decorative program for a dining room and described as being ''inspired by Nature and Men.'' Pieces from this ensemble are held at the Musee du Berry in Bourges. The shaped oval centerpiece basket is, in the piece offered here, removable. Two single figures measures 15.5 x 11.25 x 10 and the centerpiece is 13.5 x 20 x 7.5 inches.
