FINE RARE KUBA 'GOL FARANGI' RUG, LATE 19TH CENTURY - The polychrome field with. a large 'Gol Farange' design, around a central inscription, within an ivory kufic border. The 'Gol Farange', (foreign flower) was derived from European intervention in design in the late 19th and early 20th century, defined by rose like flower heads and foliage within European Roccoco style leaf scroll framing. It became a popular design style adopted by weavers from a multitude of middle eastern weaving centres. This shows a highly stylised version presented in a kaleidoscopic range of jewel like colours, and framed within a rare kufic border. Although with rewoven ends and possibly reduced in length, this is a fascinating, unusual work of woven applied art. Measures Approximately 53 x 45inches; 4ft.5 inches x 3ft.9in; 135 x 115cm.
