RARE BIJAR 'GAROUS' RUG, MID 19TH CENTURY - The blue field with a large scale 'Garous' design, comprising split arabesque, flower heads and palmettes, linked by an angular vine lattice issuing tendrils linked to small flower heads, within an ivory border enclosing continuous flower heads and leaves linked by meandering vines, plain blue surround. This rug design is an example from an identifiable, significant group of decorative rugs and carpets often classified as 'Garous.' Garous is a Province in northwest Persia, the most important town in which is Bijar. The composition and pattern drawing defines the attribution to this group, which appears to originate and derive from the Persian 'Strapwork' group from the late 17th and early 18th centuries, see HALI, issue 41, pp.35-44. Small sized examples such as this rug, appear to be rare, and the open spacious bold rendition of this design presented in this rug suggests an early date, supported by the colour palette. Later examples, apart from being woven as large room sized pieces tend to carry more detail in a range of brighter colours.
