FINE ORNATE SARUK FARAGHAN CARPET, CIRCA 1880 - The abrashed terracotta arched field with a central tree, topped with a blazen palmette, issuing palmettes, raceme of blossom, flower heads and curled leaves between a pair of ornate columns supported by cypress trees, below dove grey leaf edged spandrels enclosing palmettes linked by arabesque scrolls, within a blue border enclosing continuous ivory Koranic inscribed cartouches, between flower heads linked by flowering vines. It is interesting to note that in this fine carpet, both in terms of pattern drawing and range of colours used is remarkably similar to those seen in contemporaneous so called Heriz and Tabriz silk carpets. Measures Approximately 115 x 95 inches; 9ft.7 inches x 7ft.11in; 293 x 242cm. Condition Pile finely woven, close cropped, worn to knot bars, with scattered areas of foundation visible throughout, top left hand corner rewoven, see photos.
