Bidspirit auction | FINE UNUSUAL BAKSHAISH CARPET, NW
FINE UNUSUAL BAKSHAISH CARPET, NW PERSIA, CIRCA 1880 - The camel field with a central column of red and blue rosettes , between rhombus lozenges and abrashed bunches of grapes flanked by columns of 'in and out' shield palmettes and further grape bunches, linked by angular vines issuing flower heads and leaves, within a pale blue border enclosing continuous turtle palmettes alternating with flower heads linked by angular vines ending in hooked leaves, twin guard stripes, plain camel surround. This unusual carpet displays a striking ornate formal design drawn in a rectilinear style with the rare addition of bunches of grapes. Such an unusual addition is consistent with the approach adopted by Bakshaish weavers who enjoy degrees of originality or quirkiness in their endearing individual designs. The detailed traditional style of border encountered in various north and west Persian weaving centres acts as a superb contrast to the bold rendition of the ornate field design. The colours are more pastel orientated and juxtaposed to maximise the visual impact of the composition. The presence of green tones as seen in the palmettes and grape bunches is unusual and most effective in highlighting elements of the design. For a carpet with a similar design, see Sotheby's London, Carpets, 20th September 2006. Sultanabad, Lot 206. Measures Approximately 127 x 97 inches; 10ft.7 inches x 8ft.2in; 323 x 247cm.
