Bidspirit auction | A FINE ZIEGLER SULTANABAD CARPET,
A FINE ZIEGLER SULTANABAD CARPET, CIRCA 1880 - The dove grey field with a central column of large ogival palmettes supported by columns of similar smaller palmettes linked by sinuous vines issuing flower heads and leaves, within a wide terracotta border enclosing pastel polychrome palmettes linked by elongated diagonal stepped leaves issuing flowering vines, plain camel surround. A superb example of early Ziegler weaving, defined by the large scale field design and associated wide border with similar large flora forms, drawn in a sophisticated simplistic style. The range of colours are from the characteristic Ziegler palette, applied in such a way as to maximise the harmony of the accomplished Ziegler design presented. Foot Note: The firm of Ziegler & Co. of Swiss origin and based in Manchester, England, was one of the largest exporters of printed textiles to Turkey and Iran in the second half of the nineteenth century. It began importing Persian carpets to England, and setting up its own workshop in Arak, (then Sultanabad) in north-west Iran in 1876, producing carpets in a recognisable, distinctive style, in terms of both design and colour. It remained in production until the firm closed in 1934 and much is known about its history and products. Ziegler carpets held enormous popularity as furnishings in wealthy homes throughout the firms active life and have maintained popularity in western homes to the present day.
