Gene Kloss (1903-1996) Fiesta Afternoon 1964 The etching with drypoint, published in an edition of 50 prints on Somerset watermarked paper, is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right and titled lower left near the edition inscription of 26/50. The title on this print does not completely identify the importance of the scene. A notation along the lower edge of the sheet that appears to be in the artist's hand tells more. The inscription, 'At Taos Pueblo - saw Geronimo Day, Sept. 30 annually.' San Gerome Day is an important centuries-old celebration marking the harvest and blending Catholic tradition with Pueblo customs. An open air market like that pictured here is a part of the Pueblo tradition. Gene Kloss was introduced to the art of etching by complete serendipity. At the end of her last semester at the California School of Fine Arts in San Francisco, her teacher of anatomy and life class, Perham Nals, offered his students a 'seminar' on his personal passion of etching. In an oral interview with the Smithsonian Archives of American Art, Gene Kloss remarked ' I had seen in his back office this big old, hundred-year-old Star Wheel press and it fascinated me and the work I had seen him do.' With Nals' assistance Kloss produced her first etching, to which he remarked 'If this is your first etching, you are going to be an etcher.' The rest is art history.
