Raymond Howell was a self-taught African American painter, printmaker, muralist, and collage artist born in Oakland, California. Raised in foster care with limited formal education, by his early thirties, he was a full-time, self-supporting artist. He exhibited widely across the United States from the 1950s onward and was active as both an artist and educator, founding Art Associates West in San Francisco's Haight-Ashbury district in the mid-1960s as a gallery and teaching space. Howell's work blends realism with influences from impressionism, surrealism, and abstraction. In 1999, Stanford University presented a 40-year retrospective of his work.
