Willard Grayson Smythe (1906-1995) - WILLARD GRAYSON SMYTHE (1906-1995) 1940 ABSTRACT OIL. Willard Grayson Smythe (1906-1995) Untitled (Geometric Abstraction) 1940 The floating abstract composition is signed and dated lower right. Willard Grayson Smythe was a Chicago-based modernist active in the early to mid 20th century. He worked primarily in watercolor and related media. The present work is one of only two oils on record by Smythe to appear at auction. Before 1950, Willard Smythe exhibited frequently at many museums in the United States and Canada. The December 1947 Bulletin of the Art Institute of Chicago listed him as one of the most successful American abstract painters, in the company of Man Ray and Alexander Calder. The opposite of most abstractionists, Willard Smythe's artistic output declined after 1950 and he turned his attention to teaching and graphic arts. Overall framed size measures 31.25 x 23.25 inches.
