Kansas city, Missouri collectors Jim and Virginia Moffett began collecting the work of Midwest women artists in the early 1990s. Their interest spread to other regions, like Colorado where they had a second home, thus their interest in the present work. The following is from a Moffett collection label verso: When artist Frank Mechau of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center visited their Denver high school, the Magafan twins were convinced they needed to study with the mural painter. Jenne won the Carter Memorial Art Scholarship of ninety dollars and shared it with her sister so they could both attend the Colorado Springs Fine Art Center. The tuition covered only two months, but Mechau, recognizing their talents, hired both of them as mural assistants. Throughout their careers, the Magafans worked very closely and painted in similar style until later years. They were remarkably non-competitive, and jointly earned several mural commissions during the WPA relief programs of the 1930s. The Balcony demonstrates characteristics of Jenne's later style, when she turned to a lighter palette and more abstract, cubist-inspired forms.
