It anticipated a major work that was awarded the purchase prize in the Nelson-Atkins Museum of Art's Mid-America Annual Exhibition in 1958. That much larger award winning canvas is also being offered in this sale. Both are from the collection of the nationally-recognized Kansas City collectors Jim and Virginia Moffett. Charles Bunnell was born in Kansas City, Missouri in 1897. He studied at the Broadmoor Art Academy (now the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center) and taught at the Kansas City Art Institute during the summers of 1929, '30, '40 and '41. During the depression, he won a mural commission from the Public Works of Art Project and created easel paintings for the WPA.The total hammer selling price proceeds for this lot benefits the Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery in Lindsborg, Kansas.
