AN UNUSUAL QASHQAI KASHKOULI RUG, SECOND QUARTER 20TH C - With an east Caucasian Shirvan design, the dark blue with a column of three conjoined red stepped medallions supported by scattered hooked rhombus medallions, alternating red and saffron stepped arch spandrels, within an ivory continuous linked bird border, dice horizontal end bands. On first inspection this rug looks like a Shirvan rug from the east Caucasus, however, the presence of the alternating dice ends are an identifying feature of the Qashqai tribal group. The bi coloured side cord wrapping is also an identifying feature. The reverse knotting detail, and the presence of red weft threads compounds this attribution and combined with the bright tones of colour would suggest that this rug was made by a Kashkouli subgroup of the Qashqai.
