Joe Joseph John Jones was a prolific painter, lithographer and WPA muralist. His strong left leaning sensibilities motivated his focus on the American Scene and Social Realism in his paintings. He sought to document the struggles of the working man but also created regionalist themes like the image here. Around 1934-1935, Jones, then a self-taught painter from St. Louis, was invited to participate in New Deal art programs following early critical success with his depictions of laborers and rural life. He was eventually appointed WPA supervisor for the easel painting division of St. Louis. He also produced murals under the auspices of the program.
