Birger Sandzen (Kansas, 1871-1954) Western Kansas Late Evening 1910 The shimmering composition built from short, mosaic-like strokes of pure color is signed lower left front and inscribed by a later hand on the frame. It carries the provenance of the Oscar Thorsen Collection, Birger Sandzen Memorial Gallery (BSMG) - 1968.0040. The Oscar Thorsen Collection was donated to the Birger Sandzen Gallery in 1968. A long-time member of the Bethany College music faculty and a close friend of Birger Sandzen, he collected a number of the artist's works as well as other modernists he encountered during his travels with Sandzen to the American Southwest. The Gallery's ''Thorsen Room'' is named in his honor and displays many works from his collection. Pointillism in the style seen here is a painting technique that Birger Sandzen was probably first exposed to in Paris around 1894. During his studies with Edmond Aman-Jean, an early associate and studio mate of the founder of pointillism Georges Seurat. Sandzen at the very least was trained in the color theories that underpins the pointillist technique. Many of his canvases from this 1910s period, and his nailcut block prints from the late teens, display principles of this technique. Canvas measures 18 x 30.25 with a framed size of 25 x 37 inches.
