Clarence Holbrook Carter (1904-2000) Ode to Solitude 1941 The oil on canvas by this Cleveland School realist and New Deal muralist is signed and dated lower left, titled verso on the stretcher. Around the time this work was created, Clarence Holbrook Carter was an art instructor and created murals for public buildings in Portsmouth and Ravenna, Ohio under PWAP and WPA programs. In 1935, his painting The Creepers had earned first prize at the Cleveland Museum's ''May Show.'' and was later acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, making Carter the first artist from Ohio to be collected by the Met. His work later entered major museum collections, including the MoMA, Cleveland Museum of Art, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Whitney, and others. He was elected an Associate Member of the National Academy of Design in 1949 and became a full member in 1964. Canvas measures 26.25 x 40.25 with a framed size of 30.25 x 44.25 inches.
