Adolphe Borie (1877-1934) In a Cafe 1927 The impression of a passing moment with a young woman in a cloche hat is signed upper right front, and further identified by a label verso from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Behind her, the letters CAF(E) are seen in reverse on the cafe window. This work is an excellent example of Borie's unique blend of realism and impressionism. This painting is documented in the Smithsonian Art Inventories Catalog listed as In a Cafe (oil on canvas) by Adolphe Borie and notes 'Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1975' with control number IAP 36120297. It appears the Met acquired the painting with the Arthur H. (Hoppock) Hearn Fund. A Met publications record (Watson Library/Met Archives, ContentDM) lists: Borie, Adolphe. In a Cafe. Oil on canvas, 22 x 18 in. Signed (upper right): A. Borie. Arthur H. Hearn Fund, 1932. An additional reference is found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art acquisitions document (Arthur H. Hearn Fund), noting title, medium, dimensions, and the 'A. Borie' signature, suggesting museum ownership at one point. The label verso includes an accession number but it differs from other records. This work later appears at Sotheby's New York, June 28, 2000, Lot 98, titled In a Cafe , 22 x 18 inches but no catalog listing with provenance could be found. This image was also reproduced in period print sources as ' In the Cafe. ' Canvas measures 22 x 18 with a framed size of 27.75 x 23.75 inches.
