William Penhallow Henderson (1877-1943) is best remembered as a central figure in the Santa Fe art colony where he was celebrated for his vibrant depictions of the Southwest. But before his move west in 1916, his work reflected the cosmopolitan influences of Boston and Europe, where he was exposed to trends like Japonisme. This early painting, with its flattened composition, stylized birds and foliage, and focus on ornamental surface, displays that decorative sensibility. Once in Santa Fe in 1916, his focus shifted toward regional modernism and vibrant depictions of Pueblo ceremonies, New Mexico landscapes, and Pueblo architecture.
