Harold Noecker (1912-2002) Untitled (Cyclists) Mid 20th Century The artist plays with the absurd, portraying unlikely cyclists riding bikes that seemingly float in a stage-like setting almost devoid of recognizable features. The work is signed lower right front. Harold Noecker was an American surrealist painter born in Urbana, Illinois, and active in Chicago during the 1930s and 1940s. He exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago, the Milwaukee Art Institute, the 1964 World's Fair in New York, and the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond. He was a part of that tradition of surrealist painters that flourished in the upper Midwest during the mid 20th century, another of which is represented in this auction: Julia Thecla.
