He was a prominent American painter and muralist trained at the Art Students League of New York under John Sloan and Kenneth Hayes Miller. Unlike this landscape, he is most known as a realist style centered on urban life and social commentary. A New Deal program artist, his major public commissions include murals at Ellis Island, the New York Public Library, and Union Station in Ogden, Utah. A respected educator, Laning taught at the Art Students League and the Kansas City Art Institute. The exhibition, and thereby this work, predtae 1954 when the Whitney moved to West 54th Street.
