John Edward Costigan (American 1888-1972) (Untitled ) Figures in the Forest Mid 20th Century The impressionist oil on canvas board is signed lower left near the artist's designation of membership in the National Academy. John Costigan briefly studied at the Art Students League under William Merritt Chase; but was largely self-taught through self-discipline and community sketching sessions at the Kit Kat Club. This 'club' served as a gathering place for illustrators, painters, and commercial artists to practice figure drawing from live models and interact with other early 20th century artists. Costigan exhibited at the Corcoran Gallery and Art Institute of Chicago. In 1928 he was elected a National Academician, an honor he marked by adding N.A. to his signature as found here.
