Following time in France where he studied painting in the impressionist techniques, Dawson-Watson accepted a position teaching at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts in 1904, remaining until 1915. He influenced a generation of St. Louis artists through his teaching and exhibitions. Beyond the classroom, Dawson-Watson was further involved in the cultural life of St. Louis. He played a significant role in organizing and directing theatrical productions and pageants, including the grand Pageant and Masque of St. Louis in 1914, which celebrated the city's 150th anniversary.
