Hazel Janicki Teyral (American, 1918-1976) Untitled Tableau of Magic Realism 1948 The pageant of expressive figures and allegorical elements in a theatrical scene of magic realism is signed lower right front and displayed in a great frame. The work is dated 1948. Hazel Janicki Teyral was born in London to American parents and raised in Paris. She relocated to Cleveland, Ohio, in 1928 to study at the Cleveland School of Art, where an allergy to turpentine led her to adopt tempera painting as her preferred medium, as found here. Her work is characterized by realistic figures set in dreamlike, symbolic environments - the definition of Magic Realism. As an artist, Hazel Janicki Teyral received a number of mural commissions and considerable recognition including a Tiffany Foundation Award in 1949 and a National Institute of Arts & Letters grant in 1955. Her work was exhibited at the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Cleveland Museum of Art. She also contributed to the art community as an educator at Kent State University and as president of the Women's Art Club. Her works are held in collections including the Cleveland Museum of Art, the Art Institute of Chicago, and the Smithsonian Archives. Condition There are areas of thin overprint and minor inpainting in the outermost gray band that appears as an outer frame to the top, the left side and part way along the bottom from the left corner. The areas appear as brushes of coverage with a few minor areas of spotting. Displays very well, no other issues. No scratches, chips, losses, or visual detractions.
