Thomas Hart Benton (1889-1975) Departure of the Joads 1939 The rare large format lithograph printed on GCM watermark paper in an edition of 100 prints is signed by the artist in pencil below the image lower right. This impression is listed in Fath as number 34. Twentieth Century-Fox Film Corporation commissioned Benton to create this as part of a series of six lithographs to promote the film adaptation of John Steinbeck's novel, The Grapes of Wrath. This is a nice, dark impression in unusually fine condition. Benton's remarks in Fath read: ''Scene from Steinbeck's ''Grapes of Wrath.'' A large reproduction (billboard size) was made to advertise a Fox Co. movie made from the book. A painting was also made of this subject which is still in my hands.'' Image measures 13 x 18.5, sheet is 16 x 24, and the frame is 22 x 27.25 inches.
