FREDERIC JAMES (1915-1985) WATERCOLOR ON PAPER - Aboard the S.S. Monterey 1943 Inscribed verso: 'Drawing from my bunk aboard the S.S. Monterey Troopship in route to Brazil, Gulf of Mexico, August 1933.' Frederic James served in the U.S. Army during World War II from 1941 to 1945. He initially worked as a draftsman for the Army Corps of Engineers. In 1943, he was appointed leader of the War Art Unit for the South Atlantic War Project in Brazil, where he documented military activities through photography and painting. This sketch was made at that time, not in 1933. Measures 10 x 9 inches.
