Like Kansas artist Robert Sudlow, Karl Mattern was clearly influenced by Albert Bloch at Kansas University. In 1927, Mattern exhibited with Bloch at the Art Institute. He won first prize for both the painting and watercolor categories of the KCAI Sweepstake show of 1934 and had a one-man show at the Nelson-Atkins Museum in 1947. He had attended the Chicago Art Institute and began teaching at KU in 1925. There's much more to the story of this underrecognized artist associated with Kansas and Iowa. An art critic said of Mattern's work in 1966: 'Much of the interest in his landscapes lies in the strong configuration of the skies, and he intensely organizes the patterns on the land so that they are at once with the turbulence above.'
