John Douglas Patrick studied at the St. Louis School of Fine Arts and Academie Julian Paris, France where his works were accepted for exhibition in the Salons of 1886, 1887 and 1888. In 1889 his work was shown at the Paris Universal Exposition. Patrick came to Kansas City and served as primary painting instructor at the Art Institute for 32 years.
