Moilan (1881-1937) Penn Valley Lake Circa 1934 The post impressionist plein air landscape, signed lower left front, depicts an identifiable view in Kansas City's Penn Valley Park. The title verso confirms the subject. Otto Moilan moved to Kansas City from Minneapolis around 1929 and became an instructor at the Kansas City Art Institute where he also participated in exhibitions. He showed his work at the William Rockhill Nelson Gallery of Art, the Alden Gallery and the Women's Club. He was a member of the Kansas City Society of artists. At the time of his death, he was employed by the E.H. Roberts portrait company, having operated a photography studio of his own twenty years earlier. During the 1930s, Moilan painted a number of Kansas City, Missouri city scenes under the auspices of the WPA. Canvas measures 24 x 28.25 with a framed size of 27.5 x 31.75 inches.
