Wilimovsky produced an etching titled Xochimilco Cathedral in the 1930s suggesting the period and background of this work. He had much earlier studied under William Merritt, Chase, and later in Paris, and then Florence under the provisions of a European traveling scholarship from the Chicago Art Institute. He was an instructor at the Milwaukee School of Fine and Applied Arts before taking a position with the Kansas City Art Institute in 1914. Even after his tenure there ended, Wilimovsky continued to exhibit at KCAI including works from his travels to the Virgin Islands.
